The History of Zem Zem Shrine…
Zem Zem Shrine was granted a dispensation December 22, 1892, chartered August 16, 1892, the third Shrine Temple in Pennsylvania. Syria Temple in Pittsburgh in 1877, Lu Lu Temple in Philadelphia in 1884, preceded Zem Zem to the Shrine. Rajah Temple in Reading in 1893, Irem Temple in Wilkes-Barre in 1895, Jaffa Temple in Altoona in 1903 and Zembo Temple in Harrisburg in 1904 comprise the seven Temples in Pennsylvania.
For many years our Temple held ceremonials first in Gable Hall in downtown Erie, and at such places as the Maennerchor, Elks auditorium, Masonic Temple Colonial, Shea’s Columbia Theater and a public auditorium.
In the early 1900’s, the temple purchased a home at 124 East 8th Street and it was the Temple’s location until February 12, 1980, when fire destroyed the building. Zem Zem Shrine continued at the address until it moved to the present location at 2525 West 38th Street. read more…

About Shriners International
Shriners International is, at its most basic level, a fraternity.
It all started in Manhattan in 1870 when some members of what’s considered the world’s oldest fraternity – Masonry – were hanging out at their favorite tavern. They felt that Masonry, which traces its roots to stonemasons and craftsmen of the Middle Ages, was a tad too focused on ritual. These guys wanted a fraternity that stressed fun and fellowship.
Two of those gentlemen – Walter M Fleming, M.D., and Billy Florence, an actor – took that idea and ran with it. Florence came up with the idea for a Near Eastern-themed party after attending a party thrown by an Arabian diplomat. Fleming added the structure, drafting the fraternity’s name, initiation rites, rituals and rules. Together, Fleming and Florence designed the fraternity’s emblem, devised a salutation and determined that the red fez with the black tassel would be the group’s official headgear.
The first chapter, Mecca Shriners, met in New York City in 1872. As word got out about the fledgling organization, membership grew rapidly, spreading across the U.S. In the early 1900s, membership spread into Canada, Mexico and Panama. Today, Shriners International is a fraternity with nearly 200 temples in several countries, thousands of clubs around the world and hundreds of thousands of members dedicated to the principles of brotherly love, relief and truth.

We are a fraternity based on fun, fellowship, and the Masonic principles of brotherly love. We come from all walks of life, meet on the level and enjoy sharing things we have in common. We are Masons first, and became Shriners in the brotherhood in search of more internal growth by helping children in need of medical attention that they might not get otherwise, and share this growth with fellow brothers. We get great pleasure in performing our charitable part in every way we are able, and in doing so we have fun and build relationships that last an eternity. Every time a Shriner puts on a costume, dresses in funny clothes, rides in a tiny car, waves from a float in a parade or participates in any fashion that makes a person smile and happy for the moment, it makes us swell up inside with joy. The bottom line is “We Care”.
